The Elements & Principals of Art
After reviewing HarmonIntroDesignPrinciples i was able to understand the different techniques artist use to harmonize and give a certain feel or view to their work. Such as asymmetrical balance, unifying the art work, using geometric shapes, and scale. Artists are always on the look out to communicate active and effectively, vibrant life in all of it’s diversity without visually assaulting the viewer. This is best shown in the following pieces.
Here we have a painting by Fernando Botero, The Musicians, made in 1991. Botero creates unity in The Musicians with form, shape, color, line, and space. right off we notice how the colors play well with each other. The way the brown bounces off the dark blue and black color gives it harmonious feeling to it. Also all of the musicians are over weight and rounded giving it that shape effect. Lastly we see how all of the musicians are all compacted together giving it a focal point bring the painting all together. All of the these elements are able to give the painting the right, complete, and pleasing visual.
Woman Holding a Balance created by Johannes Vermeer which was painted between 1662 and 1665 is a great example of asymmetrical balance. Here, the use of asymmetrical balance is evident as the artist has dispersed large areas of shadow with much smaller areas of bright light. The focal point, the woman holding the balance, is right of center and is counter-balanced by the large and empty areas to the left. The careful juxtaposition of different elements makes this painting all work together.

On this last piece called Expedition made in 1973 by Joseph K. Levene scale is used immensely. Scale refers to a size of an object in relation to another. It is also an important factor in defining the meaning and significance of each work, particularly in contemporary art. In this art work we see different objects being dispersed and scaled to different sizes, emphasizing some more than others. We see the biggest object which is the air balloon down, to the smallest one beneath it that appears to be a miniature house. My take on this piece is its message on travel hens the tittle Expedition and how we can see many different and odd things along the journey.
